St. Mark's Community Garden
In 2013, St. Mark's Episcopal Church created a community garden utilizing the square-foot garden method. Led by Vestry Member Cheryl Banner, several "gardeners" built frames, planted, weeded, and harvested on Saturdays throughout the spring, summer, and early fall. The Second Harvest food pantry at Hamilton United Methodist Church, where many parishioners volunteer and where Second Sunday donations are sent, received an abundant amount of fresh produce and herbs from the garden.
Antioch is a community where more than 82% of the elementary school children are eligible for the free or reduced lunch programs in Metro Nashville Public Schools. In 2014, the garden has been expanded, and families from the Antioch community have been invited to invest their time and effort in providing fresh vegetables for their own tables. Work in the garden began in earnest the last Saturday in April and the first Saturday in May when nearly two dozen gathered to build boxes, shovel, rake, fertilize, and plant. (See photos below.) St. Mark's is grateful to the Antioch Home Depot, Keith Dittino, Davidson County Sheriff"s Farm, and Cardwell Farm for their support for this ministry.
